Agricultural Districts

Property inclusion into an agricultural district in Erie County occurs once per year during the month of September.  You must file an application with the County between Sept. 1 and 30.  You can add property to an Ag district that is highly suitable for farming or has a current farm enterprise that produces crops, fruits, vegetables, horticultural specialties, livestock, maple sap, aquaculture and bee products.  Approximately 90 family-owned farms on GI are in an Erie County agricultural district.

Inclusion in the Ag district requires compliance with the Town Code as currently adopted, unless the NYS Department of Agriculture & Markets determines that local law unreasonably restricts agricultural activity.  The NYS Department of Agriculture & Markets has many resources about Agricultural Districts available on their web site HERE along with a helpful FAQ brochure.
